Q&A with Dus Stone aka A Sword in the Stone
1. Can you share the story behind your artist name, A Sword in the Stone?
The name has a personal connection for me. My last name is Stone, and it’s been my nickname for as long as I can remember. Before I knew what direction I was heading in, I was already using it. One day, I was wearing a Sword in the Stone T-shirt, and it clicked. I’ve always been drawn to medieval themes, so I leaned into it—and it took off from there.
2. What inspired the creation of "On The Sword"? How does it tie into the themes of the project?
The inspiration came while I was in the studio. I envisioned the tracks as a map representing a warrior's journey—someone navigating battles in a cold field and the icy touch of an iron blade. I wanted to bring that warrior scenario to life. I started by working with vocal samples to tie the theme together. The track embodies the raw concept of battle, and one of my favorite quotes from the track is, "Hold your throat on this sword."
I’ve been working to integrate the medieval aesthetic into my music and social platforms while keeping my other releases geared towards labels. It’s been over a year since I started playing this track live, and it’s already proven to resonate powerfully on big sound systems.
3. What was the creative process behind this track? Were there any specific inspirations or experiences?
I really wanted to push myself deeper into creating my own sounds and synths. I’ve been making music for about two and a half years, and this track came together as I explored presets and incorporated dramatic intros into the warrior theme. Unlike some tracks that take a lot of effort to create, this one felt like it fell into place naturally.
For the vocal samples, I had fun collaborating with my Facebook group. I asked about 10 people to send me voice memos saying "On this sword", and we even held votes for upcoming releases. It was exciting to make my fans a part of the creative process.
4. You’ve worked with collectives like The Gradient Perspective, Subciety and The Widd Fam.
How have these partnerships shaped your work?
These collectives have had a massive influence on me. The Widd Fam was the first label to release my music. Historically, I’ve been seen as a deep dub artist, but I see myself as a 140-deep dub and experimental artist. The Widd Fam gave me that first big platform to show my work and receive meaningful feedback. I was also able to DJ the set before The Widdler himself on the WiddFam Tunesdays 69th Episode
The Gradient Perspective also played a huge role by including one of my experimental tracks in their dubstep compilation. Collaborating with them has helped push my boundaries as an artist.
5. Any upcoming events or releases?
6. What are some milestones in your journey so far?
A big milestone for me was my track “Swamps of Maraketh” hitting 15k plays. Another was playing at Summer Camp Music Festival’s electronic stage and the VIP tent. I’ve been attending that festival for eight years and working there as a finance manager for five. Flying coast-to-coast three times during my first fall tour and playing four shows in Oregon were also significant highlights.
7. Your music blends a variety of genres. How do you approach this, and what defines your sound?
I don’t let genres define my music—I write each track as a story. I envision scenes, like finding someone injured in a cave or saving someone on a medieval battlefield, and build the music around those visuals. My sound incorporates diverse elements, especially with drums, synths, and atmospheric details, to evoke strong emotions.
8. You’re known for your high-energy performances. What’s been your most memorable show?
Probably playing with Creighfish at Summer Camp or performing in the VIP tent. Summer Camp is close to home for me, so it holds a special place in my heart.
“Summer Camp Music Festival is like a second home for me. I’ve been attending the festival for the past eight years, and it’s where I fell in love with the live music scene. My connection to the festival goes even deeper because I’ve worked there as a finance manager for the last five years, handling vital operations behind the scenes.
Performing there has been an incredible honor. I’ve had the chance to play on the electronic stage and even in the VIP tent. Sharing my music at a festival that has been so influential in my life felt surreal. Being able to walk on stage at a place where I’ve grown so much personally and professionally was a full-circle moment for me.
The energy at Summer Camp is unmatched, and the connections I’ve made there continue to inspire my creativity.”
